Mapping apps

Which apps map well?

Apps with a title bar and a back button on each screen: most of Apple's, most settings-style apps, banking apps, smart-home controllers. Apps built from full-screen custom views with no visible title (games, some social apps) give the reader nothing to hold on to.

Does the recording need to be perfect?

No. The app samples a frame every half second and ignores frames that barely changed, so a steady walk with a pause on each screen is enough. Miss a corner and you can record it later and merge.

What if the reader misreads a word?

Long-press the station and rename it. Deleting a station removes everything beneath it; the sheet tells you how many that is before you confirm.

Why are some screens listed as orphans?

An orphan is a screen whose back-button label didn't match any other screen's title. Usually the parent screen was never recorded, or the title was cut off by a scroll. Record the missing screen and merge again; the app will not guess the link for you.

Can I map the same app twice?

Yes, and merging is the point. Matching is by name at each level, ignoring case and punctuation, so existing stations keep their place and only new ones are added.

Searching

Why does "wifi password" find Wi-Fi but not the password?

The map holds screen titles and row labels, never values. There is no Wi-Fi password on the map to find, by design.

Does search work in flight mode?

Yes. Root-word matching, stopword removal and scoring all run on the phone. There is no online mode to fall back to because there is no online anything.

Can I add my own synonyms?

Not yet. The synonym table is curated inside the app. Send words that should have matched and didn't through the contact form; useful ones get added in updates.

Privacy

Is anything uploaded when I import a recording?

No. The video is decoded on the phone with AVFoundation, read with Vision, and the temporary copy is deleted when the import finishes. The app contains no code capable of making a network request.

What about the bundled Settings map, was that someone's phone?

It was crawled from a development iPhone and then sanitised by hand before bundling. Account names, network names and device-specific rows were removed; the review notes are kept with the project.

Where are my maps stored?

In the app's own Documents folder, one JSON file per map, with iOS complete file protection. They are encrypted whenever the phone is locked and included in your normal iPhone backup.

Buying and devices

I bought Pro on one iPhone. Do I pay again on the next?

No. Tap Restore Purchases in the app's Settings on the new phone while signed in to the same Apple Account.

Will there be an iPad or Mac version?

The app runs on iPad today in iPhone-compatibility mode. A native iPad layout is being considered; Mac is not planned, because the Settings-map use case is a phone problem.

Minimum iOS?

iOS 17. The reader relies on Vision and NaturalLanguage features that landed there, and the app is written in SwiftUI with no third-party code to carry older versions.
